A continuing creative journey… this is how Lola (Lauren Little), StarCentral’s Beauty Guru of the Month for October 2013, describes her interest in style and make up.
The self-confessed late bloomer has paradoxically professed not having any interest in makeup until she was in college. Those years when high school girls have just about a whole kit in their bags, Lola was just not into the fad… not until a Michelle Phan video tutorial struck her, and the rest as they say, was history.
Her fascination in makeup was rooted in her perception of the whole thing. She considered putting on makeup a unique form of artistry – one that evolves with her and simultaneously reflects her aspirations.
Lola’s makeup video tutorials are now being viewed and followed by thousands of ladies across the globe. Her execution, style, speed, and inventiveness have all evolved and have dramatically improved since her first tutorial back in February this year. The professional quality of her videos is now a far cry from that first video tutorial of a girl wearing a casual New York Giants hoodie. Now, even her music, her lighting, the tone of her voice, and all the other small details were incorporated to ensure an engaging and visually educational beauty tutorial.
A strong support group in the form of great friends and a reassuring family made Lola the success she is in such a short span of time. She says being surrounded with positive people has helped bring out the passion and the inspiration that she had for her craft. Her viewers and followers have also helped her develop a unique sense of style collaboration – one that included varied input from people with different journeys, different tastes, and different characters. Her connection with her viewers sometimes goes beyond makeup, and the depth of her connection with some has gone through the borders of improving self-esteem, feeling beautiful from the inside, and sharing aspirations, even if they were thousands of miles apart.
Her moods, her desires, and her interests dictate Lola’s makeup palettes. From earthly neutrals to loud hues, she attests that tones are dependent on these facets. The colour of her hair, her eye shadow, her lipstick, and even the shade of her mascara are like summaries of her current being. The evolution of her strokes changes with time, and her unique ability to blend interesting tones have won her like-minded fans across continents.
Attending the International Makeup Artist Trade Show in New York is one of the highlights of her career. She looks forward to joining more events related to the style and beauty industry. She looks at them as a unique learning experience that will increase her competitiveness and creativity in makeups.
Lola’s belief in the inherent beauty of every individual has made it possible for her to connect with her audience beyond makeup. Their stories inspire her to excel in her craft, and she looks at their ideas as learning nuggets that will help her become better in her field. Her empathy and unique talent to connect with different people through the artistry of makeup has made her an icon in her own right. Her character and positive perception of life are two things that will certainly bring her far in this industry. There are very few people who apply makeup with a knack for the arts that’s just beyond sheer makeup strokes.
