Disney+ has released the key art and teaser trailer for its upcoming Australian Original series, “The Artful Dodger,” set to premiere exclusively on the platform in Australia on November 29.
“The Artful Dodger” delves into the adult double life of Jack Dawkins, Charles Dickens’ famed prince of thieves known as The Artful Dodger. Dawkins’ nimble pickpocketing skills have transformed into the adept hands of a surgeon. The series unfolds in 1850s Australia, within the vibrant colony of Port Victory, as Dodger’s past returns with the arrival of Fagin, tempting him back into a life of crime. A more significant threat, both to Dodger’s way of life and heart, emerges in the form of Lady Belle, the Governor’s daughter, who is determined to break gender norms and become the colony’s first female surgeon.
From daring heists to life-and-death surgeries, the series navigates the intricate intersection of the criminal underworld with the middle class and gentry. “The Artful Dodger” is a tale of reinvention, betrayal, redemption, and love, with a unique twist.
The eight-episode series boasts a stellar cast, featuring Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack Dawkins (The Artful Dodger), David Thewlis as Fagin, and Maia Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox. The ensemble includes Damon Herriman, Tim Minchin, Miranda Tapsell, Susie Porter, Damien Garvey, Kym Gyngell, Vivienne Awosoga, Albert Latailakepa from New Zealand, and more.
A co-production with Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures and produced by Beach Road Pictures, “The Artful Dodger” is created by James McNamara, David Maher & David Taylor. Jo Porter represents Curio Pictures as Executive Producer, and David Maher & David Taylor represent Beach Road Pictures as Executive Producers. The series’ producing team is rounded out by James McNamara (Co-Creator, Co-Executive Producer, and Writer), Andrew Knight (Co-Executive Producer and Writer), Jeffrey Walker (Co-Executive Producer and Director), and Ross Allsop (Producer).
Jeffrey Walker, known for his work on “Young Rock,” “The Commons,” and “Modern Family,” serves as the Set-Up Director. Directors Corrie Chen and Gracie Otto, along with the writing team of James McNamara, Andrew Knight, Vivienne Walshe, and Dan Knight, bring their creative prowess to the series. Miranda Tapsell provides story consultant services.
“The Artful Dodger” will also be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. starting November 29th.
