Disney has officially released the first trailer and poster for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Moana, giving audiences their first glimpse into the reimagined world of Motunui. The film stars rising talent Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson, who returns to portray the iconic trickster demigod, Maui.
The trailer offers a breathtaking look at the lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and beloved characters that made the original animated film a global hit. Viewers are reintroduced to the majestic island of Motunui, the shapeshifting demigod Maui, and the mischievous yet charming tribe of the Kakamora. Most notably, audiences hear Lagaʻaia deliver the powerful declaration, “I Am Moana,” marking a defining moment in her portrayal of the wayfinder destined to restore balance to her people.
Alongside Lagaʻaia and Johnson, the live-action cast features a strong line-up of talent from across the Pacific. Auckland native John Tui stars as Chief Tui, Moana’s steadfast and pragmatic father. Frankie Adams, a Samoan-New Zealander, portrays Moana’s spirited and supportive mother, Sina. Completing the family is celebrated New Zealand actress Rena Owen, who takes on the role of Gramma Tala, the wise and revered elder who encourages Moana to embrace her destiny.
This retelling of the Oscar®-nominated animated classic follows Moana as she answers the Ocean’s call, embarking beyond the reef for the very first time. Joined by the larger-than-life Maui, she sails into uncharted waters on a heroic quest to save her island and rediscover her identity as a master wayfinder.
The film is directed by Thomas Kail, the Emmy® and Tony Award® winner best known for Hamilton. The project is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with executive production from Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana in the animated films Moana and Moana 2.
Audiences across Australia and New Zealand can set their sails for an epic cinematic voyage when Disney’s live-action Moana arrives in cinemas on 9 July 2026.
