Most Promising Actors Of The Year For 2016

1. James Kokolis  (Australia)

Milton-James Kokolis is a 20 year old upcoming actor who hails from Sydney, Australia. Late in high school his passion for film and movies led him to give acting a go and he fell in love with the art. He is currently studying screen acting part time at a local school (Screen Actors Workshop) and began working on short films (Bless You, Seekers and Leaders, Wannabe, The Weaver, Prufrock & Co and Date Night) who is a film maker himself in 2015. He has been accepted into Screenwise for 2017 and he plans on continuing to work on other projects including an independent film he has been cast in which begins shooting early on in the year.

2. Jerome Varlet-Green (Australia)

Jerome is an Australian actor, model, musician, and writer from New South Wales. Though only immersing himself in the realms of art and performance in the last few years he has proven himself a prolific and versatile performer. With a particular affinity to stage theatre and music Jerome has recently performed as Robbie Hart in Hornsby Musical Society’s ‘The Wedding Singer’ and is currently gigging for his rock band Amber Architect. He has also appeared in AIPA’s Shrek the Musical Jr, DRAMAC Presents Godzilla: The Red Planet and 1.5: Starship Rob. Jerome’s one goal is to become a successful performer in as many areas as he can. As well as involving himself in as many projects as possible from student films to larger scale productions he is never with a moment wasted spending is spare time writing songs and productions.

3. Barry Backhouse (Australia)

Barry Backhouse is a performing artist, specialising in acting, singing and dancing. With an Advanced Diploma of Arts in Stage and Screen Acting (91380NSW) from the Actors College of Theatre and Television, Barry has ambitions in entertaining on film and on stage. So far, his favourite performances have been playing Boq in a sold out, four week season of Wicked, acting at Universal Studios Japan and working in a number of theatre shows such as It’s A Wonderful Life, Blabbermouth, Cosi, Hamlet, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Chicago as well as short films such as Bedtime Story, Timeline, Them’s the Breaks, Broken, Sunrise and Until it’s Gone. Barry’s eclectic style and skills are as broad as his aspirations and he will never stop chasing his dreams.

 4. Billy Bourchier (Australia)

Billy is a professionally trained theatre performer currently touring the world in Sir. Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Les Misérables as Joly and the first cover for the young romantic lead Marius. Billy’s early years were spent cutting his teeth in the ammeter theatre scene in Canberra, earning him a Canberra & Area Theatre Award or ‘CAT’ for Best Male Actor in a Youth Musical for his role of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar at Marist College. Following this he moved to Brisbane to study his passion for 3 years at the Queensland Conservatoriums Music Theatre Bachelor Program. A degree he completed with the Chancellors Award for Academic Excellence. That same year Billy won First Prize in the Queensland Performing Arts Competition, and on the day of his graduation performed in his first professional appearance with QPAC’s Spirit of Christmas Concert alongside the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He continued to work with the Queensland Symphony as the Guest Soloist for the Centenary of the ANZACS concert. Billy also played the young romantic lead Frederic, In Harvest Rains Pirates of Penzance, and was directed by the original Frederic himself; Simon Gallaher. The production played a sold out season at QPAC. Finally, Just before joining the Australian / International tour of Les Misérables, Billy worked with the Queensland Symphony once again in Opera Queensland’s production of Candide. 5. Cameron Grant (Australia)

Growing up in the small city of Launceston in Tasmania (AUS), Cameron made the move to Melbourne to advance his performing arts career. Within months of completion of his secondary education at the Launceston College (LC), Cameron was accepted for a position within the Victorian College of the Arts to study within the 2016 intake for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre Practice). Within his time of local theatre around Northern Tasmania, Cameron was involved in companies such as Encore Theatre Company, and the PCYC Youth Drama School, whilst also studying full time at LC. Some shows he has starred in are the Cat In The Hat (Seussical The Musical, 2014; LC), Marcellus Washburn (The Music Man Jr., 2013; PCYC) and a featured ensemble of Arthur Theatre Company’s production of The Myth Project: Twin, which was performed at the Melbourne Theatre Company for its annual Neon Festival in 2014.

6. Ryan Sobolski (Australia)

Ryan Sobolski graduated from Acting at Flinders University Drama Centre in 2015 and has since relocated to Sydney. Ryan co-produced and acted in the short film Lads, Tropfest short film Reunion, and secured the lead role in Pete Ireland’s upcoming international Live Action Short Film 12.12.12. He has appeared in Network Seven’s Drama Series The Secret Daughter and recently landed leading roles in local short films Dead Weight, Emmaus, Into Trance and Nathan Keene’s coming-of-age drama Stretch. He is set to star in Dominik Hauser’s upcoming Horror Feature Film Dead Squad, shooting in Bali, February 2017. Ryan has years of training in Piano and Guitar and a talent for dance. His training in Karate as a 2nd Dan Black Belt has taught him determination and discipline. With firm goals and a strong focus, Ryan welcomes any challenging opportunity that presents itself so that he may continue to expand his interest in film.
